Sri Lankan Visit

Last week, we were very privileged to welcome Mrs Kumudu, our Sri Lankan partner teacher from Hingarumulana school.

We welcomed Kumudu to Coxhoe Primary School through a ‘culture in a box’ assembly, to introduce her to British life. Children across Key Stage 2 thought about items that make us British such as English breakfast tea, the Royal family and British currency.

Following the welcome assembly the children across the school found out lots more about Hingarumulana school, the village and Kumudu’s life in Sri Lanka. There were lots of fantastic questions and we all listened very carefully to the answers, learning lots about Sri Lankan culture and some more words and phrases in Sinhala.

Class 6 were very fortunate to take part in a Sri Lankan cookery lesson, making the delicious sweet treat of milk toffee. I think the part of the experience we enjoyed most was getting to eat our hard work and it was definitely a big hit!

Lots of children have asked for the recipe to make milk toffee at home, maybe for a special treat.

I am exceptionally proud of how the children made Kumudu feel a part of our school life. Many children greeted her with ayubowan when moving around school, something which I know she appreciated and enjoyed.

I think her visit will be an experience that we will remember for a very long time.

Milk Toffee

1 x tin of condensed milk (approx. 400g)

500g sugar

6 cardamoms – crushed to powder

½ teaspoon vanilla essence

(Cocoa powder or other flavourings to taste)

  1. Mix the milk and sugar together in a large saucepan, cook on a low heat stirring continuously.
  2. Once the mixture begins gather and thicken and moves away from the sides of the pan, add the cardamom, vanilla and any other flavourings.
  3. Turn the mixture out onto a greased tray and leave to cool.
  4. Cut into bite sized squares.

Chill garden & wildlife zone

In June 2012 we were awarded a £10,000 grant by The National Lottery Awards for All fund. The Hard landscaping was completed in association with Durham County Council OASES (Outdoor & Sustainability Education Service) team during the long summer holidays.

The fantastic new area gives access throughout the year to our Conservation area, as well as creating seating and areas accessible for those wishing for some quiet time. The planting of the area will be undertaken by pupils and volunteers during the late autumn, winter and spring. We already have many offers of plants for the new areas including our superb pond. Watch this space as the areas begin to take shape and we hope eventually look like the landscapers plan below!
